Benefits of Cycling

Cycling is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels and is a great way to improve your health and fitness levels.

Cycling outdoors is great for when the weather is fine, there’s nothing like the feel of the fresh air, it really is exhilarating.  But for those days when the weather is not so nice or the roads are busy, an indoor exercise bike is just as effective.  It doesn’t matter whether you choose an outdoor bicycle or an indoor exercise bike, you will get the same benefits from either of them.

The benefits of cycling include:

·        Helping to tone your body.
·        Helping you to lose weight.
·        Helping you to burn calories.
·        Helping to improve your overall fitness levels.
·        Helping to strengthen muscles.
·        Helping people rehabilitating from injuries to build themselves back up again.
·        Helping to improve your cardiovascular health, which in turn can help to reduce your risk of many illnesses including heart disease and diabetes.
·        Helping to increase circulation.
·        Helping to flush out toxins from the body.
·        Helping to improve your lungs and breathing capacity.
·        Helping to improve your mental health and reduce stress, by boosting blood flow and oxygen to the brain.

It is recommended that you exercise at least 2 or 3 times a week for a minimum of 20-30 minutes to get the full benefits for your health and fitness.

Low-impact

Cycling is considered to be a very low-impact form of exercising.  This means that cycling on bicycles or indoor exercise bikes is more gentle on your knees and joints than many other forms of exercise, such as running or jogging, yet it can still give you a good workout.

The reduced impact on your joints, ligaments and spine is due to the fact that your body weight is being supported entirely by the bike.

Many people are advised by their doctors to workout on an exercise bike to help them recover from sport injuries to help begin to build their muscles back up.

Burning Calories

You’ll be surprised at how many calories you can burn, working out on a bicycle or an exercise bike to help you lose weight:

·        WOMEN can burn between 207 and 345 calories for just 30 minutes cycling.
·        MEN can burn between 252 and 420 calories for just 30 minutes cycling.

Actual calories burned will depend on the intensity of your cycling.

Fun

Cycling can be fun.  Why not involve the whole family?  Enjoy a leisurely bike ride with your family and friends or join a cycling club for a more competitive challenge.

If you’re cycling outdoors, make sure you stay safe.  Wear a helmet and check that your bike is road-worthy.  Make sure that the seat is at a comfortable height for you.

If you like the idea of an indoor exercise bike, there are plenty of different types of exercise bikes to choose from.  Many upright exercise bikes have plenty of programmable workouts to choose from to make your workouts fun, interesting and varied.

If you’re looking for optimum comfort, then why not choose a recumbent exercise bike.  These types of bikes offer a large comfortable seat with back support – ideal for people who want to exercise but who have a weak back and need that extra support.

Indoor exercise bikes are a great way to get fit in the comfort of your own home.  You can listen to music or watch the TV while you cycle!

N.B. Always consult your doctor or health care professional if you are new to exercise or have any concerns relating to your health and fitness regime.
